Two police officers have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack by suspected gunmen on the convoy of the Chief of Staff to Anambra State Governor, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, along the Amansea–Ufuma axis of the state.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, reportedly targeted the convoy while it was travelling through the area. Dr. Nwankwo and other occupants of the convoy escaped unharmed as security operatives attached to the convoy engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.

According to the Anambra State Police Command, the slain officers lost their lives while attempting to repel the assault and ensure the safe evacuation of the Chief of Staff and other members of the convoy. Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the officers made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, enabling the principal and other occupants to escape safely from the ambush.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, convened an emergency security meeting and directed tactical units and operational commanders across the state to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators. He reportedly issued a 48-hour directive for a coordinated manhunt aimed at apprehending those responsible for the attack.

The police commissioner described the attack as a direct challenge to the authority of the state and vowed that those behind the killings would be brought to justice. He also warned residents and travellers to exercise caution while using the Amansea–Ufuma route, which security agencies have identified as a vulnerable corridor for criminal activities.

Security operatives have since launched intensive operations in the area, with authorities assuring residents that efforts are underway to restore confidence and prevent further attacks. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
