Gunmen on Wednesday night reportedly opened fire on the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, leaving him critically injured and currently receiving treatment at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital.
The attack occurred around 9:50 p.m. near the Osogbo Community Bank axis of MDS, Osogbo, Osun State capital, when the assailants allegedly trailed a blue Toyota Corolla conveying the chairman and his companions before unleashing multiple gunshots at the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers operated in a commando-style manner, repeatedly firing at the car, causing panic in the area. Despite sustaining severe injuries, the victims reportedly managed to escape and take refuge at the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters before the wounded chairman was rushed to the hospital.
One of the survivors described the incident as sudden and coordinated, saying the gunmen chased their vehicle and opened fire continuously before fleeing the scene.
Confirming the incident, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the attack, urging security agencies to thoroughly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. He also called for professionalism in handling the case, noting that early indications suggest possible political undertones.
Police authorities are expected to intensify investigations as tension continues to rise in the area following the violent attack.
