House of Reps Hit by Defection Wave as Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda Joins APC, Six Oyo Lawmakers Dump PDP

The House of Representatives witnessed a major political realignment on Tuesday as several lawmakers announced their defection from their respective political parties, with Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda leading the list of high-profile movers.
Chinda, who represented the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House leadership, formally dumped the opposition party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that also led to his resignation as Minority Leader.
The development came amid a fresh wave of defections that cut across multiple political parties, further reshaping the balance of power in the Green Chamber ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a significant blow to the PDP in Oyo State, six federal lawmakers abandoned the party for the Accord/APM platform. The lawmakers include Anthony Adebayo, Adedeji Olajide, Sunday Makanjuola, Oyedeji Oyeshina, Fola Oyekunle and Adigun Adekunle.
Another PDP member, Auwalu Gwalabe, also left the party for the APM, adding to the growing list of lawmakers seeking new political platforms.
However, the PDP also recorded gains as some lawmakers from rival parties crossed over to its fold. Among them were Shehu Dalhatu, who defected from the APC to the PDP, and Etanabene Benedict, who left the Labour Party for the PDP. Similarly, Alex Egbona also switched allegiance from the APC to the PDP.
Elsewhere, Esosa Iyawe left the APC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while Gbefwi Gaza moved from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the Labour Party (LP).
The latest defections underscore the increasing political maneuvering within Nigeria’s legislature as parties position themselves for future electoral contests. Political observers say the movements could have significant implications for party strength, legislative leadership, and coalition-building ahead of the next election cycle.
