Jonathan Seeks Independent Judiciary, Warns Against Political Influence
By Kehinde Awosina
Former Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan has called for a truly independent judiciary, stressing that courts must never become tools for political manipulation or partisan interests.
Speaking at a Nigerian Bar Association event, Jonathan emphasized that the judiciary must remain impartial and protect the will of the people. He warned that when powerful politicians influence court decisions, public confidence in democracy is weakened.
Jonathan also urged the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain their independence in both name and practice, noting that credible elections and a fair justice system are essential for democratic stability. According to him, citizens must be confident that their votes count and that electoral outcomes reflect the genuine will of the electorate.
The former president further argued that strong institutions, rather than powerful individuals, are the foundation of a healthy democracy, adding that justice must prevail over political influence.
