Katsina Court Sentences Woman to Death for Aiding Terrorism, Arms Trafficking

A Federal High Court sitting in Katsina State has sentenced a woman, Hauwa’u Mukhtar, to death by hanging after finding her guilty of conspiracy to commit terrorism and aiding terrorist activities.
The conviction followed her arrest on September 16, 2023, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at Jibia Motor Park in Katsina State.
According to court documents presented during the trial, Mukhtar was intercepted while allegedly attempting to transport 438 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition to a suspected bandit leader in Zamfara State. Security operatives said the interception formed part of ongoing efforts to disrupt arms supply networks linked to armed groups operating in the North-West.
During the proceedings, the prosecution called witnesses and tendered exhibits which the court admitted as evidence. The court held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt on two counts bordering on conspiracy and terrorism-related offences under the Katsina State Penal Code Law, 2021.
Delivering judgment, the trial judge ruled that the severity of the offence warranted the maximum penalty prescribed by law, resulting in a death sentence by hanging.
The ruling adds to a growing list of terrorism-related convictions secured by the DSS in recent months, including a separate death sentence handed down in June and another case in which a female arms courier was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment earlier this year.
Security agencies have continued to intensify clampdowns on arms trafficking networks believed to be fuelling banditry and other violent crimes across northern Nigeria.
