Kwankwaso Threatens Exit as NDC Replaces Kano Candidates Over 60/40 Deal

A fresh crisis has erupted within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the replacement of several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State, a move that has reportedly triggered threats by former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to quit the party if the changes are not reversed.

According to party documents, the Kano State chapter of the NDC revised its list of candidates for federal and state legislative positions, citing the need to uphold an existing power-sharing agreement between the party's original structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

The document, signed by Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, stated that the adjustments were necessary to reflect an agreed distribution formula under which the Kwankwasiyya faction would control 60 per cent of elective positions and party offices, while the existing NDC structure would retain 40 per cent.

The revised list approved candidates for several federal constituencies, including Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Sumaila/Takai and Gwale.

Changes were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.

The document was copied to NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso, and the party's North-West Zonal Chairman, underscoring the significance of the dispute.

The development has intensified concerns over internal cohesion within the opposition party, with political observers warning that a breakdown in the 60/40 arrangement could trigger defections and weaken the party's preparations for future electoral contests.
