Messi Makes World Cup History as Argentina Defeat Austria 2-0

Defending champions Argentina secured a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after a 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday, with captain Lionel Messi producing another record-breaking performance.

The Argentine superstar scored both goals to become the outright highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history. His strikes against Austria took his tally to 18 World Cup goals, surpassing the previous men's record held by Miroslav Klose and establishing a new all-time mark in the tournament.

Messi's historic afternoon did not begin perfectly, as he missed an early penalty. However, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner responded in style, breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute with a clinical finish after a swift Argentine attacking move.

Austria pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the second half, but Argentina's defence remained resolute. Deep into stoppage time, Messi struck again on a counter-attack to seal the victory and send the Argentine supporters into celebration.

Argentina national football team have now won their opening two Group J matches, following their 3-0 victory over Algeria, and have qualified for the knockout stage with one group game remaining.

The victory also extended Messi's remarkable scoring streak at the World Cup, further cementing his legacy as one of football's greatest players. Just days before his 39th birthday, the Argentine icon continues to play a decisive role in his country's quest to retain the trophy they won in 2022.

Argentina's triumph leaves them firmly in control of Group J, while Austria must now seek qualification in their final group-stage match.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
