Nigeria's 230 Million Population Outweighs Available Resources Despite Revenue Growth — Daniel Bwala
By Kehinde Awosina
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has acknowledged the economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians, attributing the challenge to the country's rapidly growing population and longstanding infrastructure deficits despite improvements in government revenue.
Speaking during a media engagement, Bwala responded to concerns about why many citizens have yet to feel the impact of the government's economic reforms in their daily lives.
According to him, while government revenue has increased under the current administration, the available resources remain insufficient to adequately cater to a population exceeding 230 million people.
"The population is over 230 million, but the resources we have, however, the increased revenue is not enough to match with the population and deficit in terms of infrastructure," he said.
Bwala maintained that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu has introduced policies aimed at improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, citing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund as one of the programmes directly benefiting citizens.
He noted that more than one million students have reportedly benefited from the scheme, emphasizing that the beneficiaries are largely from low-income families rather than affluent households.
"The government of President Tinubu has introduced policies that have affected the common man on the streets. For example, the over one million beneficiaries of NELFUND are not the children of the rich; these are the children of the poor," Bwala stated.
The presidential aide also weighed in on state-level development across the country, praising the progress recorded in Abia State while arguing that Enugu State has performed even better according to available statistics.
He further highlighted the achievements of some states governed by the ruling party, pointing to Lagos State and Borno State as examples of effective governance.
According to Bwala, Lagos has made significant strides in infrastructure development, agriculture, security, and environmental sanitation, while Borno has demonstrated strong leadership through the performance of its governor.
His remarks come amid ongoing public debate over the impact of the federal government's economic reforms, with many Nigerians expressing concerns over rising living costs despite official reports of improving economic indicators.
