NUC Drives Universities Toward Entrepreneurship and Innovation

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has renewed its call for Nigerian universities to intensify efforts in promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, and skills-based learning as part of reforms aimed at transforming the country’s higher education system.

The Commission said the initiative is designed to shift the focus of university education from producing job seekers to developing job creators who can contribute meaningfully to economic growth.

According to the NUC, universities are expected to strengthen entrepreneurship programmes, expand innovation and research hubs, and ensure that academic work is more closely linked to real-world challenges and industry needs.

It added that higher institutions must regularly update their curricula to reflect global trends in technology, digital development, and enterprise creation in order to remain competitive and relevant.

The Commission further stressed the importance of stronger collaboration between universities, the private sector, and government agencies to enhance practical training and improve graduate employability.

It explained that the ongoing reforms are part of broader efforts to reposition Nigeria’s university system for sustainable development, global competitiveness, and innovation-driven growth.
