Obi Faults Court Decision on NDC Registration, Vows Democracy Must Prevail

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has described the recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja nullifying the party's registration as another setback for Nigeria's democracy.

Reacting to the ruling in a statement shared on his social media platforms on Friday, Obi said he received news of the judgment while attending engagements in Imo State. He expressed disappointment over the decision, arguing that it further weakens democratic institutions and undermines citizens' confidence in the nation's electoral and judicial systems.

According to Obi, democracy thrives when political participation is encouraged rather than restricted. He maintained that the growth of democracy depends on expanding political space and giving citizens more opportunities to freely associate and contest elections through platforms of their choice.

The former Anambra State governor warned that actions perceived to limit political competition could erode public trust in democratic governance, stressing that Nigeria should be strengthening its democratic institutions instead of creating obstacles to political participation.

The judgment came after the Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside its earlier decision directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a political party.

Following the ruling, the NDC rejected the verdict and announced plans to challenge it at the Court of Appeal. The party's leadership said its legal team was reviewing the judgment and remained confident that it would be overturned on appeal.

Obi urged supporters of the party to remain peaceful and continue to uphold democratic values while the legal process runs its course, expressing optimism that justice would ultimately prevail.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
