Osun Lawmakers, APC Trade Accusations Over Call for Police Commissioner’s Redeployment
By Abdulahi Musa
There is growing political tension in Osun State as lawmakers and the All Progressives Congress (APC) exchanged sharp accusations over a call for the redeployment of the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.
A group of federal and state lawmakers, including members of the National Assembly and the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the platform of the Accord Party, had earlier demanded the immediate redeployment of the police commissioner, accusing him of bias and alleged failure to maintain neutrality in handling security matters in the state.
The lawmakers, led by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, claimed that the Commissioner of Police had not demonstrated impartiality in dealing with security issues, alleging that his actions and inactions had contributed to rising insecurity in parts of the state.
They further alleged that intelligence reports indicated plans by opposition political actors to trigger unrest ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, raising concerns about the safety of lives and property across the state.
According to them, the inability of the police leadership to promptly arrest perpetrators of violent incidents captured in recent attacks had emboldened criminal elements, worsening public fear and insecurity.
The lawmakers also urged the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to immediately redeploy the Commissioner of Police, describing his continued stay in office as a risk to peace and credible electioneering in the state.
However, the Osun APC swiftly rejected the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and false. The party accused the Accord Party lawmakers of spreading misinformation to discredit its leaders and create tension ahead of the upcoming governorship election.
In a reaction issued by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the APC insisted that its members and candidates had no plans to engage in violence, adding that the party remained focused on winning the election through lawful means.
The APC further alleged that the claims of planned attacks were fabricated to paint opposition figures in a bad light and distract from what it described as internal governance challenges within the ruling political structure in the state.
Political observers say the latest exchange highlights rising political tension in Osun ahead of the August governorship election, with security concerns and allegations of partisanship continuing to dominate public discourse.
Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the call for the Commissioner of Police’s redeployment.
