Oyo APC: Adelabu Moves to Halt Defection Wave, Urges Unity over Primary Tension
By Kehinde Awosina
An All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Chief Adebayo A. Adelabu, has called on party members across the state to remain calm, united, and patient following the conclusion of the party’s primary elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
In a press statement released on Monday, Adelabu urged stakeholders, leaders, and supporters of the party to disregard unofficial lists and unverified claims circulating on social media regarding the outcome of the primaries, stressing that only the party’s National Headquarters has the constitutional authority to announce the final results.
He cautioned members against being misled by rumours and premature declarations allegedly being circulated by certain interests within the party, noting that such actions could fuel confusion and deepen internal divisions.
According to him, “no individual, group, or state-level committee is authorized to announce the final outcome of the primaries,” adding that members should await official communication from the national leadership of the party in Abuja.
Adelabu also expressed concern over reports of defections by aggrieved members allegedly reacting to disputed consensus arrangements, describing such moves as harmful to the unity and electoral strength of the party.
He warned that leaving the party at a critical moment would only weaken its structure and benefit opposition parties, recalling that internal crises and defections contributed to setbacks in previous elections.
The aspirant expressed confidence in the ability of the party’s national leadership to manage grievances arising from the primaries and ensure fairness, justice, and cohesion across all levels.
He further appealed for restraint in public statements by party leaders, youth groups, women organisations, and aspirants, urging them to avoid inflammatory remarks capable of escalating tensions.
Adelabu maintained that patience at this stage was not weakness but a demonstration of loyalty and maturity, adding that unity remains essential for the party’s success in upcoming elections.
He reaffirmed commitment to the progress of the APC and urged members to remain focused on the broader goal of securing victory for the party at both state and national levels.
The statement concluded with a call for continued faith in the leadership of the party, as well as confidence that internal challenges would be resolved through proper party structures.
