Peter Obi to Tinubu: Follow Starmer’s Example, Step Aside for Nigeria’s Sake

Former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democracy Congress 2027 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider stepping down from office, arguing that Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic and security challenges reflect a failure of leadership. According to Obi, effective governance requires accountability, and leaders should be willing to relinquish power when they can no longer meet the expectations of citizens.

Obi reportedly drew parallels with recent political developments in the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced plans to leave office, describing such actions as examples of democratic responsibility. He argued that leaders in established democracies often accept responsibility for policy failures and declining public confidence.

The former presidential candidate criticized the Tinubu administration over persistent economic hardship, rising unemployment, inflation, and insecurity, maintaining that Nigerians are facing severe difficulties despite repeated government assurances of improvement. He contended that the country's current challenges stem largely from poor governance rather than a lack of resources.

Obi further urged the Federal Government to prioritize policies that directly improve citizens' welfare, insisting that public office holders must be judged by their ability to deliver tangible results. He maintained that leadership should be measured by service to the people and not by political rhetoric.

The Presidency and leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress have previously defended Tinubu's administration, citing economic reforms, infrastructure projects, and fiscal measures as evidence of progress, while dismissing opposition criticisms as politically motivated.
