Police Arrest 22-Year-Old Over False Bandit Invasion Rumour in Osun

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man, identified as Odetayo Adebayo Samuel, for allegedly spreading false information on social media claiming that bandits had invaded parts of Osun State. Preliminary investigations revealed that the video he shared was misleading and triggered widespread panic among residents.

According to the police, the suspect posted the video on Facebook on June 1, alleging a bandit attack in the state. However, investigations showed that the footage actually depicted members of the public restraining a man experiencing a mental health crisis and had no connection to banditry or any security breach.

The police said the false claim generated fear across several communities and contributed to heightened anxiety following recent rumours of bandit activity in some parts of the state. The suspect was subsequently arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Authorities disclosed that he was later released after appeals from his elderly parents and a public apology. Nevertheless, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, warned residents against circulating unverified security information capable of causing public panic and disorder.

The command reiterated its commitment to combating misinformation and urged members of the public to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing it online.
