Public Outcry Trails First Lady’s Vehicle Donation to APC Women Amid Kidnapping Crisis
By Kehinde Awosina
As kidnapped victims from the recent Oyo State school abduction remain in captivity and insecurity continues to grip several communities across Nigeria, a vehicle donation by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to women leaders of the ruling APC has sparked widespread reactions on social media.
The controversy followed the inauguration of the Tinubu Torch Bearers initiative in Abuja, where the First Lady donated operational vehicles to APC women leaders from opposition-controlled states and urged party members to promote the achievements of the administration's Renewed Hope agenda.
The development comes at a time when many Nigerians are expressing frustration over the country's worsening security situation. Public attention has particularly focused on the recent mass abduction in Oyo State, where families of victims have continued to demand urgent government action for the safe return of their loved ones.
Critics argue that the timing of the donation sends the wrong message, contending that government officials should prioritize addressing insecurity and the plight of kidnapped citizens. Across social media platforms, many users questioned the decision to celebrate political activities while families affected by kidnappings and violent attacks continue to await relief and intervention.
The backlash has been amplified by recent protests and public demonstrations in parts of the country over insecurity. In Oyo and neighboring states, residents have repeatedly called on federal and state authorities to intensify rescue efforts and strengthen security measures.
Supporters of the First Lady, however, maintain that the donation was part of ongoing political mobilization and empowerment efforts within the APC, insisting that such activities should not be interpreted as neglect of the security challenges facing the nation.
The debate has once again highlighted growing public concern over insecurity and the expectations many Nigerians have for government leaders to demonstrate empathy and urgency during periods of national distress.
