Soldiers Killed Defending Military Base in Borno

 By Kehinde Awosina

At least nine Nigerian soldiers were reportedly killed when suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked a military formation at Mandara-Girau in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to security sources, the terrorists launched the assault in the early hours of Friday, taking advantage of adverse weather conditions to attack troops stationed at the base. The soldiers engaged the insurgents in a fierce gun battle while defending the facility.

Sources said several other personnel sustained injuries during the attack, while reinforcement teams were subsequently deployed to the area to contain the situation and prevent further incursions. The extent of damage to military equipment and facilities was not immediately clear.

The latest attack highlights the persistent security challenges in parts of Borno State, despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations by troops of Operation Hadin Kai against Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in the North-East. Previous military engagements in the Mandara-Girau axis have witnessed intense confrontations between troops and insurgents.

Military authorities had yet to issue a detailed official statement on the incident as of press time.
