Tinubu Hails Navy as Pillar of Economic Growth, Commissions Three New Warships

 By Kehinde Awosina

President Bola Tinubu has described the Nigerian Navy as a vital driver of the nation's economic development, commending its role in safeguarding maritime assets and strengthening national security.

The President made the remarks during the 2026 International Fleet Review held in Lagos as part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy's 70th anniversary celebration.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu praised the Navy for its sustained efforts in combating piracy, crude oil theft, smuggling, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes, noting that these achievements have contributed significantly to improved economic activities and investor confidence in the country.

He emphasized that the maritime sector remains a critical component of Nigeria's economy, serving as a major source of revenue and a gateway for international trade. According to him, the Navy's operations have helped secure the nation's waterways, leading to increased oil production and enhanced protection of strategic national assets.

As part of the ceremony, the President commissioned three newly acquired naval vessels—NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila and NNS Gurara—describing the additions as a boost to the Navy's operational capabilities.

Tinubu also acknowledged the Navy's contributions to counterterrorism and anti-insurgency operations across the country. He commended the professionalism of naval personnel and expressed confidence that ongoing investments in equipment, training and technology would further strengthen the force's effectiveness.

Reaffirming his administration's commitment to national security, the President pledged continued support for the Navy through improved funding, modernization programmes and enhanced welfare for personnel.

He further lauded the collaboration between the Navy, other security agencies and international partners, saying such partnerships have helped make the Gulf of Guinea safer for commercial and maritime activities.

Earlier, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, attributed recent successes in maritime security to government support, technological advancements and strategic partnerships. He assured Nigerians that the Navy would remain committed to protecting the country's territorial waters and economic interests.

The International Fleet Review attracted military officials, government representatives, foreign naval delegations and other stakeholders from within and outside Nigeria.
