Tinubu Names Ex-UNILAG VC Ogundipe New NUC Governing Board Chairman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who resigned from the position less than a year after his appointment.

Professor Aina had been appointed by President Tinubu in July 2025, while members of the NUC Governing Board were inaugurated in November of the same year.

A distinguished academic and renowned botanist, Ogundipe served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos from 2017 to 2022. His areas of specialization include molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation.

The 66-year-old scholar holds a doctorate degree in Botany from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Lagos. He currently serves as the Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State.

Throughout his academic career, Ogundipe has earned recognition from several professional bodies. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnaean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology, London. He has also served as President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and Chairman of the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC).

As Chairman of the NUC Governing Board, Ogundipe is expected to provide strategic oversight for Nigeria’s university regulatory agency, with a focus on improving funding, strengthening academic standards, enhancing global competitiveness, and promoting stability across the nation’s tertiary education sector.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in Ogundipe’s ability to provide visionary leadership and sustain the credibility of Nigeria’s university system. The President noted that the appointment aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its commitment to expanding access to quality education, upholding academic integrity, and advancing reforms in the higher education sector.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
