President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria's 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee responsible for coordinating the national celebrations.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the President's address would be one of the major highlights of the Democracy Day programme.
Akume described Democracy Day as an important national occasion that provides an opportunity for Nigerians to remember the sacrifices of those who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, particularly Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whose legacy remains central to Nigeria's democratic journey.
According to the SGF, the annual observance also offers the Federal Government a platform to highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and implementing development initiatives across the country despite existing economic and social challenges.
With preparations entering the final phase, Akume urged members of the committee to begin work immediately to ensure a successful celebration. He noted that the events planned for this year's Democracy Day would be modest and reflective of the government's commitment to prudent management of public resources.
The Federal Government has approved a series of activities leading up to June 12. These include a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, and a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9.
Other programmes include youth- and women-focused engagements scheduled for June 10, a presidential broadcast on Democracy Day, and a gala night to conclude the celebrations.
Nigeria observes Democracy Day annually on June 12 in recognition of the historic 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the nation's history and as a symbol of the country's democratic struggle.
