Nigeria’s sprint hurdles queen, Tobi Amusan, continued her impressive start to the 2026 season by claiming gold in the women's 100m hurdles at the New Taipei Athletics Open in Taiwan, setting a new meet record in the process.

The world record holder crossed the finish line in 12.72 seconds to comfortably defeat a strong field at the World Athletics-sanctioned event. Taiwan's Bo Ya Zhang settled for silver in 13.17 seconds, while compatriot Yi Po-an claimed bronze with a time of 13.37 seconds. Amusan's performance erased the previous meet record of 12.80 seconds, which had been held by former world champion and Olympic medalist Nia Ali.

The Nigerian star was dominant throughout the competition. After cruising through her qualifying heat earlier in the day, she delivered an even stronger performance in the final. Reports from Taiwan indicated that Amusan seized control of the race after the fourth hurdle and steadily widened the gap, showcasing the technical brilliance that has made her one of the most successful hurdlers in history.

Beyond the victory, Amusan's presence generated significant excitement among athletics fans in Taiwan. Local media reported that the 29-year-old expressed surprise at the warm reception she received from spectators and praised the enthusiasm of the crowd. She also commended silver medallist Bo Ya Zhang, describing the Taiwanese athlete as a promising talent with a bright future.

The triumph marks Amusan's second consecutive title and second meet record of the season, reinforcing her status as one of the leading contenders ahead of major international championships later this year. Although her 12.72 seconds was slower than her season's best of 12.28 seconds, it further highlights the consistency that has kept her among the world's elite hurdlers.

Amusan, who remains the women's 100m hurdles world record holder with her historic 12.12-second run, is currently ranked among the top hurdlers globally and appears to be building momentum at the perfect time as the athletics season gathers pace.
