US Approves $2bn Sale of Advanced Anti-Drone Weapons to Kuwait
By Kehinde Awosina
The United States has approved a proposed $1.98 billion sale of advanced counter-drone weapon systems to Kuwait, a move aimed at bolstering the Gulf nation's air defence capabilities amid growing security concerns in the region.
The package includes sophisticated anti-drone technology manufactured by American defence company Anduril and is expected to enhance Kuwait's ability to detect, track and neutralise unmanned aerial threats.
In a statement, the U.S. State Department said the proposed sale supports Washington's foreign policy and national security objectives by improving the security of Kuwait, a major non-NATO ally and a strategic partner in promoting stability across the Middle East.
The approval comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Gulf following recent security incidents. Kuwaiti authorities recently condemned what they described as Iranian aggression after a drone strike reportedly targeted the country's international airport, leaving several people dead and injured. Iran has denied involvement in the attack.
The defence deal remains subject to congressional notification procedures and other procurement requirements before it can be formally concluded.
