“Use Our Ancient Strengths Against Modern Crime” — Ooni Charges Yoruba Monarchs on Banditry
By Abdulahi Musa
The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has called on traditional rulers across Yorubaland to complement modern security efforts by deploying indigenous and traditional mechanisms to combat the growing menace of banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The revered monarch made the call while addressing Yoruba traditional rulers, stressing that the safety of communities should remain a collective responsibility. He urged monarchs to work closely with security agencies while leveraging age-long traditional institutions and community structures to protect lives and property.
According to the Ooni, insecurity has continued to threaten socio-economic development across many parts of the country, making it necessary for traditional rulers to take a more proactive role in intelligence gathering, community vigilance and conflict resolution.
He emphasized that traditional institutions remain respected and influential among the people, noting that their involvement could significantly strengthen efforts to curb criminality and restore peace in affected communities.
The Ooni further appealed to residents to support security agencies with useful information and remain vigilant against suspicious activities within their localities.
