“We Are Silent Because Our Children Are Not in Nigeria” — Salami Blasts Government Over Oyo School Abductions

 By Kehinde Awosina

A lawmaker representating Ede South, Ede North, Egbedore, Ejigbo in Nigerian House of Representative, Bamidel Salami, has criticized the Nigerian government over what he described as a lack of urgency and public outrage regarding the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.

Speaking amid growing concerns over the fate of the victims, Salami lamented that the response to the incident would have been different if the children involved belonged to influential families. According to him, many public officials have remained indifferent because their own children are studying abroad and are not directly affected by the country's worsening insecurity.

His remarks come as pressure mounts on authorities to secure the release of dozens of pupils and teachers kidnapped during attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State in May. The abductions have sparked nationwide protests by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which has warned that the continued insecurity in schools could force teachers to withdraw their services across the country.

The crisis has also led to an indefinite strike by public school teachers in Oyo State, who are demanding the safe return of the abducted victims and stronger security measures in schools. Reports indicate that at least 46 pupils and teachers were taken during coordinated attacks on three schools in the area.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has defended its handling of the situation, insisting that details of ongoing rescue operations cannot be made public for security reasons. Presidential aides have argued that revealing operational strategies could compromise efforts to secure the victims' release.

The Senate has also condemned the abductions, describing them as a tragedy and an assault on the nation's collective humanity, while calls continue for urgent action to protect schools and rescue those still in captivity.
