Belgium Crush USA 4-1 to Reach World Cup Quarter-finals Despite Trump Controversy

Belgium booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over hosts the United States in their Round of 16 clash at Seattle Stadium, ending the Americans' campaign despite the controversy surrounding striker Folarin Balogun's eligibility. 


Belgium dominated the encounter, with Charles De Ketelaere delivering a standout performance by scoring twice and providing an assist. Hans Vanaken also found the net before Romelu Lukaku sealed the emphatic victory with a stoppage-time goal.


The United States briefly restored hope when Malik Tillman equalised with a superb free-kick after Belgium's opener. However, the Belgians responded almost immediately, regaining the lead just a minute later before extending their advantage through clinical finishing and defensive mistakes by the hosts. 


The match came amid intense controversy after FIFA overturned Balogun's one-match suspension following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump had appealed directly to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The decision sparked criticism in Belgium, with politicians and football officials accusing FIFA of allowing political influence to interfere in sporting matters. 


Despite Balogun's return, the United States struggled to match Belgium's quality and organization. Christian Pulisic also suffered an injury during the match, adding to the hosts' disappointing night. 


Following the victory, Belgium will face Spain in the quarter-finals, while the United States exits the tournament on home soil after failing to progress beyond the Round of 16.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit. The development marks another early gain for Accord as the collation of results from polling units across Osun State continues.
