Ex-Kano LG Chairman Returns to Tailoring After Leaving Office, Urges Youths to Learn Skills

A former Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, Abdullahi Gali Shitu, popularly known as Comrade Abdullahi Gali Basaf, has returned to his tailoring business months after leaving office following his removal by a court.

Speaking on Wednesday, Basaf said his decision was meant to send a strong message that politics should not be seen as a permanent profession or the only means of livelihood. He stressed that public office is an opportunity to serve the people and that every politician should have a sustainable source of income outside politics. 

According to the former council chairman, tailoring has been his primary occupation for more than a decade and played a major role in financing his political career.

He said, "Tailoring is not a small trade. It sustains livelihoods. Even in politics, my tailoring business helped me financially to support my campaigns and organisations."

Basaf currently runs a tailoring shop in Sheka Ward, Kumbotso Local Government Area, where he supervises about 20 apprentices. He revealed plans to expand the business into a garment manufacturing company capable of employing at least 50 people. 

The former council boss also urged Nigerian youths to embrace vocational skills instead of relying solely on politics or waiting for white-collar jobs.

He maintained that skilled trades offer greater stability than political appointments, noting that political offices are temporary while a profession or trade provides lasting economic security.

Despite holding both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Political Science, Basaf said tailoring remains his passion and that he intends to modernise the business and contribute to job creation and economic development.
