FG Begins Training 5,000 Smart Meter Installers To Boost Power Sector

The Federal Government has commenced the training of 5,000 smart meter installers across Nigeria as part of efforts to address the country's metering gap, improve electricity billing transparency and create employment opportunities in the power sector.

The initiative, being implemented under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), is designed to equip young Nigerians with the technical skills required to install, maintain and support the deployment of smart electricity meters nationwide.

Speaking at the launch of the programme, government officials said the training would strengthen the country's metering value chain while accelerating the rollout of smart meters to electricity consumers, reducing estimated billing and improving revenue collection for electricity distribution companies.

According to the Federal Government, the trainees will receive hands-on technical instruction and certification, enabling them to participate in the nationwide installation of smart meters as the government intensifies efforts to close Nigeria's longstanding metering deficit.

The programme is also expected to generate thousands of jobs for youths while supporting the broader reform agenda in the electricity sector through improved service delivery, accurate billing and enhanced energy accountability.

Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government's commitment to expanding access to reliable electricity and ensuring that more consumers are accurately billed based on actual energy consumption rather than estimated charges.

The training is one of several interventions under the Presidential Metering Initiative aimed at modernising Nigeria's electricity infrastructure and restoring consumer confidence in the country's power sector.
