How Osun Lawmaker Irekandu Turned a Chair Request into a Life-Changing Act of Compassion

In a heartwarming demonstration of compassionate leadership, the Honourable Member representing Obokun State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi, popularly known as Irekandu, has once again shown that true public service goes beyond making laws—it is about touching lives.

What began as a simple request for a few chairs ended with the transformation of an unfinished home, bringing renewed comfort and dignity to the Chief Imam of Ibokun, Alhaji Tijani Bello.

The story unfolded during a special prayer programme organised in Ibokun by Imam Ahmoda Tijani Olakonu Kede for the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke. At the close of the event, Imam Kede approached Hon. Adeyemi with an appeal. While inviting Islamic clerics to the programme, he had visited the residence of the Chief Imam and was moved by the condition of his sitting room, which had only benches and plastic chairs. He requested that the lawmaker provide more comfortable seating.

Without hesitation, Hon. Adeyemi promised to help.

Later that day, he honoured his promise by visiting the Chief Imam at his residence. Although the two had known each other for many years, it was his first visit to the Imam's home. During the visit, he quietly assessed the living conditions and soon realised that the need extended far beyond replacing chairs.

Rather than limiting his intervention to the original request, the lawmaker resolved to undertake a more meaningful project. Through God's grace, he completed the unfinished sections of the Chief Imam's house, making it more comfortable, dignified, and suitable for the respected religious leader and his family.

The remarkable gesture drew deep appreciation from Imam Kede, who later returned to the residence to offer prayers and express gratitude for the transformation.

Reflecting on the experience, Hon. Adeyemi noted that seeing the joy on the Chief Imam's face reaffirmed his belief that the greatest fulfilment comes from being an instrument of positive change in the lives of others.

According to the lawmaker, while it may not be possible to solve every challenge confronting society, every opportunity to improve someone's life should be embraced wholeheartedly, regardless of the sacrifices involved.

His act of kindness has been widely regarded as another reflection of his people-centred style of leadership—one built on empathy, humility, and a genuine commitment to community development rather than political rhetoric.

As Obokun continues its journey of growth and development, many residents believe that such thoughtful interventions strengthen the bond between leaders and the people they serve, proving that leadership is measured not only by policies and projects but also by compassion and humanity.
