Millions Gather as Iran Begins Funeral Ceremonies for Supreme Leader Khamenei

Iran on Saturday commenced a week-long state funeral for its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with millions of mourners expected to participate in ceremonies across the country.

The funeral began in Tehran, where Khamenei's body was placed for public viewing before thousands of Iranians, religious leaders and government officials. Authorities described the ceremonies as a symbol of national unity and resistance, while tight security was deployed around major venues.

According to Iranian officials, the funeral programme will continue for several days, with processions and memorial events scheduled in several cities before Khamenei is laid to rest in Mashhad near the revered Imam Reza shrine.

Delegations from more than 100 countries are expected to attend different stages of the funeral, reflecting Khamenei's influence across the region and the wider Muslim world. Senior officials from Iran's allies are also expected to participate.

State media reported that the large-scale ceremonies are intended to honour Khamenei's decades-long leadership and reaffirm the country's resolve following his death. Government officials have urged citizens to turn out in large numbers, describing the funeral as a moment of national solidarity.

Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly four decades, died earlier this year during the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. His death marked a significant turning point in the country's political leadership.
