Nigerian-American Harvard Graduate Develops AI-Powered Hair Braiding Robot

A Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard graduate, Yinka Ogunbiyi, has developed HaloBraid, an AI-powered braid-assist robot designed to help hairstylists braid hair faster while reducing the physical strain associated with the profession. 


The innovation, described as the world's first patented braid-assist robotic technology, recently secured $7 million in seed funding led by venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The startup also received backing from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital to support its commercial rollout. 


According to the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, HaloBraid has already attracted more than 7,000 professional salons to its waiting list, highlighting strong interest from the beauty industry. 


Ogunbiyi, who holds a joint Master's degree in Engineering and Business Administration from Harvard University, conceived the idea during the COVID-19 pandemic after spending four days braiding her own knotless hair. She later partnered with David Afolabi to develop the technology. 


Rather than replacing hairstylists, HaloBraid is designed to work alongside them. Stylists begin the braiding process by sectioning the hair, adding extensions, and creating the initial braid. The robot then completes the repetitive mid-length braiding before the stylist finishes and seals the braid. This collaboration significantly reduces appointment time while helping prevent repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome. 


Ogunbiyi emphasized that the technology is intended to enhance, not replace, the artistry and personal connection between hairstylists and their clients, preserving the cultural significance of hair braiding while improving efficiency.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
