Reps Dump Own State Police Bill, Back Tinubu's Fresh Proposal

The House of Representatives has explained why it withdrew its earlier constitutional amendment bill on the establishment of state police, opting instead to consider a fresh Executive Bill transmitted by President Bola Tinubu.


The decision was reached during plenary on Tuesday after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read a letter from President Tinubu forwarding the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026 for legislative consideration. 


Moving a motion, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Francis Waive, reminded lawmakers that the House had earlier passed its own version of the State Police Bill on June 11 and later constituted a 12-member Conference Committee on July 9 to harmonise differences with the Senate's version. 


Waive, however, said fresh developments had emerged following the President's submission of an Executive Bill, making it necessary for the House to rescind its earlier resolution.


According to him, the Executive proposal contains additional provisions that require lawmakers to undertake a fresh review to ensure the legislation aligns with Nigeria's evolving national security framework and constitutional objectives. He therefore urged the House to withdraw its earlier bill and dissolve the conference committee to avoid parallel legislative processes on the same subject. 


The House adopted the motion through a voice vote, effectively rescinding the passage of its previous State Police Bill and dissolving the conference committee established to reconcile differences with the Senate.


With the decision, lawmakers will now consider President Tinubu's Executive Bill as the primary legislative vehicle for creating a constitutional framework for state police services across Nigeria. 


President Tinubu, in his communication to the House, urged lawmakers to expedite consideration of the bill, saying the proposed amendment would strengthen Nigeria's security architecture by creating a dual policing system in which federal and state police services operate within clearly defined constitutional limits.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
