South African Tyla Removes Lagos from World Tour Amid Boycott Calls Over Xenophobic Attacks

South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the schedule of her APOP World Tour, days after her planned December 22 concert in Nigeria sparked widespread calls for a boycott over renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. 


A check of the singer's official tour website on Friday confirmed that the Lagos concert, previously listed as the only Nigerian stop on the tour, had been removed from the itinerary. The revised schedule retains performances across Europe, North America and South Africa but no longer includes Nigeria. 


The development comes just days after the tour announcement triggered heated debate on social media, with many Nigerians urging fellow citizens to boycott the concert in protest against the reported attacks and killings of Nigerians in South Africa. While some argued that no South African artiste should perform in Nigeria amid the crisis, others maintained that musicians should not be held responsible for the actions of their country's government. 


The controversy intensified after activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, threatened to mobilise members of his "Ratel Movement" to stop the concert if it went ahead. In a social media post, he declared that the show would not hold in Nigeria, accusing South African celebrities of failing to speak out against xenophobic attacks on other Africans. 


However, 2027 African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore opposed the boycott campaign, arguing that Tyla should not be blamed for the actions of the South African government. He urged Nigerians to direct their anger at those responsible for the attacks rather than the singer. 


The removal of the Lagos concert follows renewed concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa after reports of fresh xenophobic attacks and the death of Nigerian national Chika Ibe in Cape Town. As of the time of filing this report, neither Tyla nor her management had publicly explained why the Lagos performance was removed, while the concert promoters had yet to announce whether the event had been cancelled or postponed.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area.
