Tinubu Will Seek Third Term if Alive, Says Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will seek a third term in office if he remains alive and healthy, despite Nigeria's Constitution limiting presidents to two elected terms. 

Speaking during a television interview, Lawal argued that Tinubu's political ambition would not end after a second term if circumstances allowed. He suggested that the President has built enough political influence to pursue another tenure, adding that no significant political force currently appears capable of stopping such an ambition.

According to Lawal, "Tinubu will go for a third term if God gives him the long life to do it. What will stop him now? Nigerians or a pliant National Assembly?" 

The former SGF expressed concerns about the state of Nigeria's democratic institutions, alleging that the National Assembly lacks the independence needed to effectively check the executive arm of government. He argued that this perceived weakness could embolden attempts to extend presidential tenure beyond constitutional limits. 

Lawal also criticized the current administration's relationship with the legislature, claiming that lawmakers have failed to provide sufficient oversight of government actions. He maintained that stronger institutions are essential to preserving constitutional democracy in Nigeria. 

His comments have sparked debate among political observers, as Section 137 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) provides that a person elected as President shall not be elected to that office more than twice. Any attempt to allow a third presidential term would require a constitutional amendment supported by the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly. 

The remarks come amid growing political discussions over the future of Tinubu's administration and preparations for the 2027 general elections, although neither the Presidency nor the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has indicated any plan to pursue a constitutional amendment for a third presidential term.
