Trump Criticises Tuchel's Decision to Substitute Kane in England's World Cup Semi-Final Loss

United States President Donald Trump has criticised England manager Thomas Tuchel over his decision to substitute captain Harry Kane during the Three Lions' 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.


Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said Tuchel made "a mistake" by taking off England's leading striker at a crucial stage of the match, arguing that Kane should have remained on the pitch until the final whistle.


"I think Tuchel made a mistake. Harry Kane is a great player and one of the best finishers in the world. You want your best players on the field when the game is on the line," Trump said. 


Kane, who had scored England's only goal from the penalty spot, was substituted late in the second half as Tuchel introduced fresh attacking options in a bid to force an equaliser after Argentina regained the lead.


The substitution sparked debate among football fans and pundits, with many questioning whether removing England's captain weakened the team's chances of staging a comeback.


Despite the criticism, Tuchel defended his tactical decision after the match, explaining that Kane had shown signs of fatigue and that the change was intended to inject more energy into England's attack.


"We believed it was the right decision at that moment. Harry had given everything, and we needed fresh legs to press and create opportunities," the England manager said.


England ultimately failed to find an equaliser, ending their hopes of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966.


The Three Lions will now face France in Saturday's third-place playoff, while Argentina prepare to take on Spain in Sunday's World Cup final.


Kane remains one of the tournament's top scorers and is still in contention for the Golden Boot despite England's elimination from the title race.
