Trump Threatens Higher Tariffs on Canada Over Wildfire Smoke

United States President Donald Trump has threatened to impose higher tariffs on Canadian goods, accusing Canada of failing to properly manage its forests and allowing wildfire smoke to pollute large parts of the United States.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump claimed Canada was responsible for the thick smoke drifting across the U.S. Midwest and Northeast from wildfires burning in Ontario and other parts of Canada. 

"We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their forests and brush," Trump wrote, describing the smoke as "filthy, polluted and unhealthy air" that has made air quality dangerous in several American cities. 

Trump alleged that Canada's failure to carry out adequate forest management amounted to "willful negligence" and claimed the recurring wildfire smoke has cost the United States billions of dollars.

He said those costs "must of necessity be added to the tariffs Canada is currently paying," signaling that his administration could increase existing tariffs on Canadian imports. He also disclosed plans to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney about the issue. 

The remarks come as hundreds of wildfires continue to burn across Canada, forcing evacuations and sending thick smoke into several U.S. states. Air quality alerts have been issued in cities including Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., and Detroit, with health officials urging residents to limit outdoor activities. 

Canadian officials have defended their wildfire response, noting that the country has invested billions of dollars in wildfire prevention and emergency management while continuing to work with the United States through cross-border firefighting partnerships. Experts have also pointed to climate change as a major factor behind the increasing frequency and intensity of the fires. 

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also pushed back against the criticism, urging U.S. politicians to support Canada's firefighting efforts instead of assigning blame, while thanking American states that have provided assistance.
