2027: Atiku Vows to Restore Fuel Subsidy If Elected President

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to restore Nigeria’s petrol subsidy if elected president in the 2027 presidential election.


Atiku made the declaration during a Facebook Live session while responding to questions on the removal of the subsidy and its impact on Nigerians.


The former vice president said although he did not initially oppose the removal of the subsidy, he had since changed his position, particularly over concerns about how the savings from the policy had been utilised.


“I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?” he asked.


Atiku added, “If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money.”


President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of the petrol subsidy during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, describing the policy as necessary to address the financial burden it placed on the government.


The decision immediately triggered a sharp increase in petrol prices and contributed to rising transportation, food and other living costs across the country.


Tinubu’s administration has consistently defended the subsidy removal, arguing that the scheme was financially unsustainable and that the funds could be redirected towards infrastructure, social programmes and other developmental priorities.


Atiku’s latest position places the subsidy debate at the centre of the emerging 2027 presidential campaign, with the former vice president promising a different approach to addressing the economic pressures facing Nigerians.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
