Atiku Vows to Reopen Borders, Says Tinubu’s Policies Ruined Northern Cross-Border Businesses

Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to reopen Nigeria’s land borders with neighbouring countries if elected president.


Atiku said the closure and restrictions at the borders had severely affected economic activities in several Northern states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic and Benin Republic.


The former Vice President said many young Nigerians who depended on legitimate cross-border businesses had been pushed into financial difficulties as a result of the government’s policies.


He argued that reopening the borders would help revive legitimate commerce, restore livelihoods and create new economic opportunities for communities that depend heavily on cross-border trade.


“The Northern states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic have suffered greatly from the closure of these borders. Many young people engaged in legitimate cross-border trade have been pushed into bankruptcy. That is why I said I will reopen the borders,” Atiku said.


He said his proposed policy would seek to facilitate legitimate trade while addressing security and other concerns associated with Nigeria’s international borders.


Atiku’s position comes as the 2027 presidential race gathers momentum, with political parties and candidates presenting different economic policy proposals ahead of the election.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
