Osun 2026: Peter Obi Demands Fadahunsi’s Apology Over Threat-Laden Remarks

Peter Obi has condemned alleged inflammatory comments attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, calling for their immediate retraction and an apology to the people of the state.

Obi, in a statement issued ahead of the August 15 poll, expressed concern that the alleged remarks could heighten political tension, intimidate voters and undermine the peaceful conduct of the election.

The NDC presidential candidate said Senator Fadahunsi, as a serving member of the National Assembly, has a responsibility to promote democratic values, peace and unity rather than make statements capable of creating fear or encouraging confrontation.

Obi described the alleged rhetoric as “alarming and unacceptable,” warning that political leaders must be mindful of the consequences of their public statements, particularly in the tense period preceding an election.

According to him, elections should provide citizens with the opportunity to freely choose their leaders without intimidation, harassment or coercion.

He argued that threats, inflammatory language and attempts to disrupt the electoral process would undermine the democratic rights of voters and potentially threaten the peace of Osun State.

Obi therefore called on Fadahunsi to retract the alleged statements and apologise to the people of Osun State.

He also urged political parties, candidates, campaign organisations and their supporters to exercise restraint and avoid statements or actions capable of escalating tensions before, during and after Saturday’s election.

The presidential candidate further called on security agencies to closely monitor inflammatory political statements and provide equal protection for voters, election officials and other citizens throughout the electoral process.

“The democratic mandate belongs to the people, and no individual, regardless of status or political office, should attempt to subvert the will of the people through fear or coercion,” Obi said.

He urged Osun residents to remain calm and peaceful while exercising their constitutional right to vote, stressing that the credibility of the election would depend largely on the ability of all stakeholders to respect the will of the electorate.

Obi concluded that conducting a peaceful and credible election would represent an important step towards building what he described as a “New Nigeria that is possible.”
