Osun NYCN Chairman Raises Alarm Over Gun Attack on Residence, Says Life at Risk

The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Osun State chapter, Comrade Akinbode Olakolupo Oluwasegun, has raised the alarm over an alleged gun attack on his residence at Osunjela, along the Ilesa–Osogbo Road, describing the incident as a serious threat to his life.

Akinbode, in a statement, alleged that suspected political thugs stormed his residence at about 2am on Friday, August 14, 2026, in what he believed was an attempt to attack him.

He said he and members of his family were not at home when the incident occurred, adding that their absence potentially prevented a more serious tragedy.

According to him, the attackers vandalised his Storex tank and damaged part of the roof of the building before leaving the premises.

The NYCN chairman said the circumstances surrounding the incident suggested that the attack may have been targeted at him rather than being an ordinary case of property vandalism.

“I have every reason to believe that the attackers came primarily to harm me. They came to my residence in the early hours of the morning, when they reasonably expected me and my family to be asleep.

“Fortunately, we were not at home. I thank God that no life was lost, but the incident has raised very serious concerns about my personal safety,” he said.

Akinbode called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, identify those behind it and establish their motive.

He said the alleged attack occurred against the backdrop of what he described as intimidation, harassment and attacks by political actors in the area.

The youth leader expressed concern that continued intimidation could escalate if urgent measures were not taken, adding that his advocacy for young people and opposition to oppression and injustice could have made him a target.

“My voice against oppression and intimidation will not be silenced by threats. My ability to mobilise young people peacefully and responsibly is a responsibility I take seriously.

“I will continue to speak for the youth and stand against injustice, intimidation and political violence,” he said.

Akinbode also appealed for increased security around him and urged the relevant authorities to take preventive measures to forestall any further attack.

He called on political leaders in the area to caution their supporters against violence and intimidation, stressing that political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue and lawful democratic processes.

“Politics should be about ideas, service and the people's mandate. It must never become a licence to threaten lives or destroy property,” he said.

The NYCN chairman further urged youths across Osun State to reject attempts to recruit them as instruments of political violence, warning that the consequences of such acts ultimately affect communities and families.

He thanked God for preserving his life and that of his family, while reaffirming his commitment to youth advocacy, peaceful mobilisation and the protection of the rights and interests of young people in Osun State.
