Osun Poly Student Stabbed to Death During NANS Convention in Osogbo

A student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Ademiju Ayeni, has been stabbed to death during the convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee, Osun State Chapter, in Osogbo.

Ayeni, a student of the Department of Estate Management, was reportedly attacked on Saturday following a disagreement at the convention held at the Osun State NUJ Press Centre. 

Sources who participated in the convention alleged that Ayeni was stabbed by a member of the programme’s security committee while attempting to prevent him from gaining access to the venue.

The student was subsequently rushed to a private hospital in Osogbo, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were later deposited at the morgue of the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, while an autopsy is expected to be conducted. 

Confirming the incident, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the police were aware of the matter.

Ojelabi explained that there had initially been a disagreement between the deceased and some individuals during the convention, but the dispute was reportedly resolved.

According to him, Ayeni later complained of chest pain after the participants dispersed. A subsequent examination revealed a stab wound on his chest, prompting his transfer to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police spokesman said the matter had been reported at the Dada Estate Police Station but could not confirm whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the incident. 

Meanwhile, the NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, described the incident as cult-related, saying the alleged perpetrator had not been identified.

Adeyemo expressed concern that the convention itself had proceeded peacefully before the altercation occurred outside the venue.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over violence and student safety at gatherings of student leaders, with calls expected for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ayeni’s death and the prosecution of anyone found responsible.
