Over 1.2 Million Candidates Pass English, Maths as WAEC Releases 2026 Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, with 1,200,514 candidates obtaining at least five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics.


Announcing the results in Lagos on Wednesday, the Head of WAEC's National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, said the figure represents 61.54 per cent of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat for the examination, reflecting a 1.42 per cent decline compared to the 2025 performance. 


According to WAEC, 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools across Nigeria, Benin Republic, Côte d'Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 eventually sat for the test. 


The examination body also disclosed that 1,687,378 candidates, representing 86.50 per cent, earned credits in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics. 


WAEC further revealed that the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of those who sat the examination, have been withheld over alleged involvement in examination malpractice. In addition, 116,031 results are still being processed due to certain issues yet to be resolved. 


The council also announced that candidates sponsored by state governments indebted to WAEC will not be able to access their results until the outstanding debts are settled, although it did not disclose the affected states. 


Candidates have been advised to generate their result-checking PINs through WAEC's official portal and access their results online.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
