'They Want To Cripple My Government' — Adeleke Accuses EFCC Of Plotting To Freeze Osun Accounts

 Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government and key officials of his administration ahead of the August 15 governorship election.


The governor made the allegation in a statement issued on Tuesday in Osogbo by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi.


According to the statement, the governor claimed to have received "credible reports" indicating that the anti-graft agency had concluded arrangements to freeze all accounts belonging to the Osun State Government, as well as those of top government functionaries.


Adeleke described the alleged move as an attempt to cripple the operations of his administration in the days leading up to the governorship election.



He argued that, if carried out, such an action would amount to "the height of lawlessness" and accused unnamed individuals of using state institutions for political purposes.


The governor maintained that there is no legal basis for freezing the accounts of the Osun State Government, insisting that the EFCC lacks the constitutional authority to take such action against a state government's accounts.


"The alleged plan to freeze the state government's accounts is designed to paralyse government activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election," the statement quoted the governor as saying.


Adeleke further asserted that the anti-corruption agency has no legal powers to freeze the accounts of a state government, urging relevant authorities to refrain from actions capable of undermining democratic processes.


As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued any official response to the allegation or confirmed the existence of any plan to freeze the state's accounts.


The development comes amid heightened political tension in Osun State as campaigns intensify ahead of the governorship election scheduled for August 15.
