Tinubu Approves New Salary Structure for Armed Forces, Up to 80% Pay Rise Begins September 1

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with the revised remuneration package scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026.


The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the development in a statement on Tuesday, saying the salary review would benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across the country's armed services.


According to Onanuga, the new salary structure adopts a graduated system that provides the highest percentage increases to junior officers and enlisted personnel in recognition of their frontline responsibilities.


Under the approved arrangement, officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.


Personnel from the rank of Colonel to Warrant Officer will benefit from a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.


The Federal Government said the review will increase the Armed Forces' annual salary expenditure from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion in personnel costs.


President Tinubu said the salary increase reflects his administration's commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in protecting the country against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.


He noted that members of the Armed Forces continue to make significant sacrifices to safeguard Nigeria's territorial integrity and ensure the safety of citizens, stressing that they deserve adequate support and appreciation.


The President also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to prioritising the welfare of troops while continuing efforts to modernise the Armed Forces through improved funding, better equipment and enhanced operational capacity.


The revised salary package is expected to boost the morale of military personnel and further strengthen ongoing security operations across the country.
