Tinubu Moves to Block Release of Records in Alleged Drug Investigation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has filed a legal challenge in the United States seeking to prevent the release of records held by American law-enforcement agencies concerning past allegations of drug trafficking.

The documents, reportedly held by the US Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Drug Enforcement Administration, are being sought under the Freedom of Information Act by transparency activist Aaron Greenspan.

According to a 16-page court filing shared with Channels Television by Greenspan’s legal team, Tinubu is challenging efforts to obtain and publicly release the records.

The President reportedly argued that the disclosure of undisclosed information would violate his privacy rights, while maintaining that he had committed no wrongdoing.

The legal action places the long-running controversy surrounding allegations linked to Tinubu’s past activities back in the spotlight, particularly as the Nigerian President prepares for the 2027 general election.

The records being sought through the FOIA process are understood to relate to previous investigations and allegations involving Tinubu in the United States. However, the filing represents a legal attempt to restrict the release of information that has not already been made public.

Tinubu’s position, according to the court filing, is that the disclosure of certain records would constitute an unwarranted invasion of his privacy.

The development is likely to generate renewed political debate in Nigeria, where Tinubu’s past in the United States has previously been a subject of scrutiny by political opponents and transparency campaigners.

The case also highlights the tension between public access to government records and the privacy rights of individuals who are the subjects of law-enforcement files.

Tinubu has maintained that he has done nothing wrong, while the latest court action seeks to prevent the US authorities from releasing the disputed records.

The legal proceedings are expected to determine whether the records requested under the Freedom of Information Act can be disclosed or whether the President’s privacy claims will prevent their release.
