Adeleke Victory Stands Unchallenged as Osun Election Petition Window Shuts

The 21-day window for challenging the outcome of the August 15 Osun State governorship election has closed without any petition being filed against Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory.


The Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal received no petition from any of the 14 political parties defeated in the election, despite the tribunal registry remaining open on Saturday, the final day for filing.


Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole.


The governor polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes. Fifteen political parties participated in the election. 


Speaking on the development, Osun Accord Chairman, Victor Akande, described the decision by opposition candidates not to challenge the result as a demonstration of political maturity.


 “We appreciate the maturity of the candidates of the opposition for not challenging the outcome of the poll. That itself is good for democracy, if an election stops at the poll,” Akande said.


Similarly, the Social Democratic Party governorship candidate, Olugbenga Ajala, said he considered the election and the processes leading to it sufficiently fair.


Ajala said the party would have approached the tribunal if it believed the election was not credible, adding that the outcome should be accepted because “we believe the best candidate won.”


Meanwhile, efforts to obtain the reaction of the Osun State chapter of the APC were unsuccessful, as calls to its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, were unanswered and a WhatsApp message sent to him had not received a response at the time of filing the report. 


The absence of any petition means Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 election has, at the close of the statutory filing period, gone unchallenged before the election petition tribunal.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
