How Akara Business Earned Me ₦10m Monthly Before I Joined Politics — Akwa Ibom Gov Umo Eno

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has revealed that he made not less than ₦10 million monthly from an akara and bread business before venturing into politics.

Eno made the disclosure during the state’s monthly covenant prayer service on Tuesday, with his account subsequently attracting attention online. 

The governor said he started the business by selling akara and bread, which he packaged as “Akara Burger,” before expanding the venture into a coffee shop.

According to him, the business attracted significant patronage from workers, particularly employees heading to ExxonMobil in the mornings.

Eno explained that customers would purchase the akara-and-bread combination alongside coffee before proceeding to work.

“I started selling Akara and bread. Back then, I was doing Akara Burger. We open the bread and put it inside for you,” the governor said.

He added that the business eventually became a substantial source of income, generating at least ₦10 million every month.

The governor’s account highlights his entrepreneurial activities before his entry into politics and underscores the potential of small and medium-scale businesses to grow from modest beginnings into profitable ventures.

The disclosure also comes amid renewed national conversations about entrepreneurship and the role of small businesses in creating livelihoods.

The governor's story gained further attention after President Bola Tinubu jokingly referred to his wife as “Iya Alakara” during a Presidential Press Corps Dinner.
