Husbands Risk Life Imprisonment for Sex Without Consent — Lagos DPP

The Lagos State Government has warned husbands against forcing their wives into sexual intercourse without their consent, stressing that such conduct can constitute an offence punishable by life imprisonment under the state’s criminal laws. 


The warning was issued by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who explained that marriage does not automatically remove a person’s right to give or withhold consent to sexual activity.


The DPP said the state’s legal framework recognises sexual consent and provides sanctions for sexual acts carried out without the consent of the other party.


The clarification comes amid discussions around sexual and gender-based violence, particularly cases involving intimate partners and spouses.


The Lagos government urged residents to understand the provisions of the law and avoid actions that could constitute sexual violence within marriage or any other relationship.


The DPP further stressed the importance of respecting individual rights and obtaining consent, noting that offenders could face severe legal consequences where their actions fall within the provisions of the law.


Authorities also encouraged victims of sexual violence to report incidents to the appropriate law-enforcement agencies and seek legal protection rather than remain silent.


The government maintained that its position was aimed at strengthening awareness of the law and protecting residents from sexual abuse and violence.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
