‘Including Peter Obi’ — Datti Says None of Tinubu’s Challengers Can Transform Nigeria

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said none of the politicians challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, including his former running mate, Peter Obi, can improve Nigeria.


Baba-Ahmed made the remarks during an interview on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye and published on Saturday. 


He was responding to a question on what advice he would give Tinubu regarding his leadership of the country.


According to him, Tinubu should prepare to leave office but should not hand over power to any of the politicians currently challenging him.


> “I will simply advise uncle (Tinubu) to please prepare to hand over and move away, but not to the people contesting against him because none of them will improve Nigeria,” he said. 


When asked whether he was referring to all the opposition candidates, Baba-Ahmed maintained that those contesting against Tinubu had, at different times, been associated with the ruling political establishment.


Asked specifically if his statement included Peter Obi, his former running mate in the 2023 presidential election, he replied, “Including Peter Obi, I’m sorry to say.” 


Baba-Ahmed argued that Obi had previously been a member of the Peoples Democratic Party when it was the ruling party, questioning whether any politician could claim to have never been associated with a ruling party.


He, however, defended his own political history, saying he had never belonged to a ruling party. He said that while he was associated with the Congress for Progressive Change, the party was an opposition party before its merger with other parties to form the All Progressives Congress.


Baba-Ahmed and Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party ticket, with Obi as presidential candidate and Baba-Ahmed as his running mate. Baba-Ahmed later left the Labour Party for the Peoples Redemption Party, while Obi subsequently moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, which has selected him as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election. 


His latest comments come amid increasing political realignments and opposition activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area.
