OPay Debunks September Shutdown Rumour, Threatens Legal Action
By Abdullahi Musa
Fintech company OPay Digital Services Limited has threatened legal action against an X user over a viral post claiming that the company would suspend its operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026.
The company described the claim as false, malicious and defamatory, and demanded that the user, identified as Cute Hafserh (@haifah_er_abba), delete the publication, issue a retraction and tender an unreserved apology.
According to OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, the company became aware of the post published on August 30, which allegedly advised customers to withdraw their funds because the fintech would be going on an indefinite break.
OPay said the publication had caused reputational and commercial damage to the company.
The company gave the user until 11:59pm on Monday to remove the post and stop further circulation of the claim, warning that it would pursue all available legal remedies if the demand was ignored.
In a separate statement on its official social media platforms, OPay urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it, warning that false narratives could cause real harm.
The fintech also assured customers that its operations remained normal and that it would communicate directly with them whenever there was important information concerning its services.
The X user subsequently deleted the post and apologised to OPay, admitting that the claim about the company shutting down from September 1 was false and misleading.
The user stated that “OPay operations are normal, and there is no break or shutdown,” while apologising for any inconvenience caused by the publication.
The development comes amid the rapid circulation of unverified claims on social media, with OPay urging customers to rely on its verified communication channels for information about its operations.
