Suspected Bandits Impose ₦40m Levy on Sokoto Community, Threaten Massacre

Residents of Kebbe town in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State are reportedly facing a fresh security threat after suspected bandits demanded a ₦40 million levy, with a threat to kill residents and burn the community if the money is not paid.

The demand was reportedly communicated on Tuesday afternoon through a local farmer, who delivered a mobile phone to the District Head of Kebbe, according to a report citing conflict reporter Bakatsine.

The bandits initially gave the community five days to raise the money but reportedly extended the deadline to seven days following appeals from residents. The new deadline is expected to expire next Tuesday. 

The reported threat has heightened concerns among residents, coming amid continuing security challenges in parts of Sokoto State.

Kebbe LGA has recently experienced deadly attacks. On August 17, suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked Ungushi community in Kebbe LGA, killing 28 people, according to the Sokoto State Police Command. The Nigerian Army subsequently said it was adjusting its security architecture around Kebbe and neighbouring communities to address threats from the group. 

The latest reported extortion demand has therefore raised fresh concerns over the safety of residents and the increasing pressure on communities affected by armed groups.
