UNIOSUN VC Stays Till 2029 as Osun Assembly Passes Amendment Bill

The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026, paving the way for the extension of the tenure of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye.


The Bill was passed on Thursday, September 3, 2026, during plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun. 


The legislation scaled its third reading after lawmakers considered and amended its provisions.


The motion for the House to proceed with the third reading was moved by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adekunle Oladimeji, representing Irepodun/Orolu State Constituency, and seconded by Hon. Olawale Oladipupo Akerele, representing Ilesa West State Constituency. 


Following the motion, the House moved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the Bill clause by clause. After the consideration was completed, lawmakers resolved out of the committee before proceeding with the final passage.


The title of the legislation was also amended from “Osun State University Establishment Amendment Law 2026” to “Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026” before it was read for the third time and passed. 


The Bill will now be transmitted to Governor Ademola Adeleke for his assent after the completion of the remaining legislative procedures.


The legislative action comes days after Governor Adeleke announced a two-year extension of Professor Adebooye’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University.


The announcement had generated controversy because the existing UNIOSUN Establishment Act provides for a five-year tenure without reappointment for the Vice-Chancellor.


The proposed extension had also attracted criticism from the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Good Governance, which argued that extending the VC’s tenure outside the existing legal framework would undermine institutional governance and the rule of law. The group threatened to mobilise legitimate civic actions against the move. 


Professor Adebooye’s current tenure is expected to expire on January 4, 2027. 


With Thursday’s passage of the amendment Bill, the proposed tenure extension now awaits the governor’s assent before it becomes law.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit.
